Gorge Pipeline Condition/Capacity Assessment

Project Start Date: January 2009
Project End Date: July 2009

This project involved the inspection of the gorge pipeline from the source to the Bhobhoyi/Umzimkhulu Waterworks. The scope of work was phased as follows:

  • Pre-Investigation Phase – the intention was to conduct a high level condition assessment of the pipe. The outcome of the pre-investigation was to establish the general condition of the pipe (whether it is usable or it should be replaced entirely).
  • External Corrosion Direct Assessment (ECDA) Investigation – which involved the inspection of the internal lining if the gorge pipeline was still usable.
  • Design Phase –the design a suitable protection system, which, most likely, will be a Cathodic Protection System.
  • Implementation Phase – the implementation of the selected protection system.

The investigation concluded that the water pipeline was not to be re-conditioned as the costs were prohibitive and the benefits uncertain.
