Improving Public Health by eliminating problems associated with sewer spillages in Extension 32, 33 and 34 in Wesselton, Ermelo under the Msukaligwa Local Municipality in Gert Sibande District
Extension 32, 33 and 34 settlements in Ermelo under Msulakigwa Local Municipality in the Gert Sibande District experience sewer spillages which have resulted in the high risk of environmental pollution and health hazards to the communities in these settlements. The spillages are a result of many factors, including the design, construction and use of existing sewer infrastructure. To improve the health conditions of residents in the area, ZIYANDA Consulting cc was appointed by the Department of Human Settlements in Mpumalanga (DHS) to assess existing infrastructure and design and construct the necessary infrastructure to eliminate the spillages.
The Project Implementation Plan prepared by ZIYANDA has identified the following priorities of Implementation for the work in Extensions 32, 33 and 34 Ermelo:
Priority 1 | : | Investigative Work, Emergency Work and Operation & Maintenance to realise the following:
|
Priority 2 | : | Implementation of identified Refurbishment Requirements obtained from Investigative Work undertaken as part of Priority 1 Work |
Priority 3 | : | Implementation of identified Upgrade Requirements obtained from Investigative Work undertaken as part of Priority 1 Work |
Because of the urgency of work in Priority 1, ZIYANDA is undertaking Priority 1 work on a “turnkey” basis. Construction work for Priority 1 Work is in progress and due for completion by the end of 2020. The package of work under Priority 1, includes the following:
- Assessment and engineering design resulted in the implementation of the following:
- The construction of 3 No. pump stations including the associated civil works
- Supply and installation of the electrical and mechanical equipment for the 3 pump stations
- 1 Km x 315mm diameter UPVC rising main pipeline from the pump station in Ext 32 to the WWTP (including associated sewer appurtenances such as manholes, valves and thrust blocks)
- 3 Km x 200mm diameter UPVC rising main pipeline from the pump station in Extension 34 to the pump station in Extension 34 WWTP (including associated sewer appurtenances such as manholes, valves and thrust blocks)
- Associated Mechanical and electrical works required for the 3 pump stations
