ZIYANDA is implementing the Thembalethu Sanitation Project for the Umkhanyakude District Municipality located in northern end of KwaZulu Natal Province. The project is aimed at eradicating sanitation backlogs in Mkuze Town through the upgrading of sanitation services at Thembalethu Township from a VIP system to waterborne system and addressing challenges on the existing sewer reticulation network and outfall sewer pipeline for Mlingo Township.
The largest component of the project is the upgrading of the Mkuze Wastewater Treatment Works to cater for the increased flows due to the sanitation services upgrade and new developments taking place in the town. The upgrade of the WWTW is from a maturation pond system to a biological nutrient removal system which involves biodegradation of sewage using bacteria and removal of nutrients from sewage resulting in effluent that is environmentally when it is released into the nearby Mkuze River.
